Where Food, Conversation, and Community Meet

Food has always been more than nourishment to me.

It is more than protein and carbohydrates. More than vitamins, minerals, calories, or fuel. Food is a living, breathing thing. It tells stories. It carries memories. It connects us to the land, to culture, to one another, and to ourselves.

At the most basic level, food sustains life. But at its highest expression, food becomes medicine, ritual, art, and community.

I have believed for as long as I can remember that food is medicine. It is one of the reasons I eat primarily a plant-based diet, with a little seafood woven in. It is why tea has become such an important part of my daily life. Tea is not simply a beverage for me; it is a ritual, a practice, a moment of mindfulness in a world that too often asks us to rush.

Every morning, I sit in my chair and sip tea. It is a small act, but it reminds me to slow down, to pay attention, and to honor the gift of being alive.

As I reflect on my life, I realize that nearly every meaningful gathering I have ever created has happened around a table.

Whether raising funds for scholarships for young women in Ghana, hosting tea circles, gathering women for conversation, celebrating milestones, sharing stories, or simply connecting with friends, food has always been at the center. Not because food itself is the destination, but because food creates the space where something deeper can happen.

A shared meal invites us to pause.

It asks us to put down our phones, look one another in the eye, and engage in the lost art of conversation. Around a table, strangers become friends. Friends become family. Ideas are exchanged. Hearts are opened. Healing begins.

Perhaps that is why I am drawn to small restaurants where the soul of the chef is present in every dish. Places where food is crafted rather than manufactured. Places where the atmosphere encourages conversation instead of competition with noise. Places where every ingredient has intention and every plate tells a story.

I am not interested in abundance for abundance’s sake.

I am interested in artistry.

I am interested in flavor, texture, creativity, and the way a beautifully prepared meal can make us feel seen, cared for, and connected. I am interested in the stories behind the ingredients, the farmers who grew them, and the hands that transformed them into something extraordinary.

I live at an interesting intersection—the place where food, tea, conversation, wellness, and women’s empowerment meet.

That intersection is where Desert Sage was born.

It is why I host gatherings. It is why I write. It is why I teach about tea. It is why I bring women together. Because I believe that when women gather around a table, something powerful happens. We encourage one another. We share wisdom. We celebrate victories. We navigate challenges. We remember who we are.

In a world that often values speed, productivity, and constant motion, I believe there is profound power in slowing down.

To linger over a cup of tea.

To savor a thoughtfully prepared meal.

To listen deeply.

To tell our stories.

To create community.

Food, at its best, nourishes far more than the body.

It nourishes the soul.

And that is the intersection where I choose to live.

A wonderful closing line for social media could be:

“I have discovered that some of life’s most meaningful conversations begin with a simple invitation: Come, sit at my table.”
