All Rise: Why Judicial Well-Being Matters
On July 25, the international community observes the International Day for Judicial Well-Being, a recognition that the health and well-being of judges are essential to the fair administration of justice and the rule of law. Inspired by the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-Being, this observance acknowledges a truth that is often overlooked: judges are human beings carrying extraordinary responsibility.
When a judge enters a courtroom, the bailiff announces, “All Rise.” The robe, the bench, and the solemnity of the courtroom project authority, confidence, and impartiality. Yet behind that robe is a person who carries the weight of difficult decisions, hears stories of trauma, violence, loss, and conflict, and must make rulings that profoundly affect the lives of others.
The public often sees the authority of the office but not the emotional and psychological demands that accompany it.
Around the world, judges routinely confront high workloads, complex legal questions, public scrutiny, security concerns, and increasing pressures from rapidly changing societies. Many spend their days listening to painful testimony involving abuse, family breakdown, criminal conduct, financial devastation, and human suffering. They are expected to remain composed, objective, and fair while absorbing the cumulative impact of these experiences.
The result can be chronic stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, anxiety, depression, and, in some cases, profound isolation.
A healthy judiciary is not merely a benefit for judges—it is essential for society. Judicial well-being is directly connected to judicial effectiveness, sound decision-making, ethical conduct, and public confidence in the courts. When judges are overwhelmed, exhausted, or struggling in silence, the entire justice system is affected.
Conversely, when judges are supported, valued, and encouraged to prioritize their well-being, the benefits extend far beyond the courthouse. A healthy judiciary strengthens the rule of law, improves the quality of justice, and enhances public trust in legal institutions.
The International Day for Judicial Well-Being invites all of us to recognize the humanity behind the robe. It reminds us that those entrusted with administering justice also deserve compassion, support, and care.
This July 25, take a moment to acknowledge the judges who serve our communities with integrity, fairness, and dedication. A note of appreciation, a kind word, or a simple expression of gratitude can remind a judge that their service is seen and valued.
As we rise in court to honor the office, let us also honor the person who wears the robe.
Because judicial well-being is not a personal luxury—it is a public necessity.
