Journey to Ghana – A Mission Rooted in Compassion

From June 22nd to July 3rd, I will embark on a meaningful journey to Ghana—one anchored in the heart of Desert Sage’s mission: to reduce maternal and infant mortality, one trained midwife at a time.As part of this trip, I will be teaching a series of workshops to nurses and midwives on compassionate patient care, with a special focus on the unique challenges faced in labor, delivery, and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Together, we will explore how compassion can be upheld, even in settings where resources are limited and heartbreak is sometimes close.I will also make a courtesy visit to the Honorable Minister of Health to gain deeper insight into Ghana’s current maternal and infant health landscape. To truly be effective in our work, we must remain grounded in the realities on the ground. My visit will include tours of both major hospitals and rural clinics. In the hospitals, I hope to closely observe NICU care—where the tiniest lives begin their fight for survival. In the clinics, I want to witness firsthand how prenatal mothers are supported, cared for, and counseled in the months leading up to birth. These experiences will help ensure our mission remains relevant, responsive, and rooted in the real needs of the communities we serve.Throughout this journey, I’ll also be meeting with our local partners who help make our work possible. Every product sold at Desert Sage Lifestyle Wellness—every tea, candle, book, and gift—contributes 15% toward providing full scholarships for young women in Ghana to become certified midwives. This is our promise: to empower women to save lives in their own communities. This trip is not only about observing—it is about listening, learning, and continuing the work of Desert Sage with humility, integrity, and purpose.— Lorna OwensCEO, Desert Sage Lifestyle Wellness
