LORNA OWENS: FROM COURTROOMS TO CLINICS
Former Attorney, Nurse and Midwife Builds a Lifesaving Mission Across Africa
MIAMI, FL - In 2010, while watching a 60 Minutes segment titled Rape as a Weapon of War, Lorna
Owens-then an attorney and former nurse and midwife-began to cry. The program detailed the horrific experiences of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and for Owens, it wasn't just heartbreaking. It was a call to action.
"I knew I couldn't sit still and do nothing," she said.
That moment changed everything. Owens decided to travel to the Congo, where she brought nurses and
doctors to train local healthcare providers-including traditional birth attendants-on how to safely deliver
babies, resuscitate newborns, and prevent maternal death. For years, she returned, building bridges of
knowledge, compassion, and care where they were needed most.
Now, Lorna Owens is expanding her mission to Ghana.
Every 90 seconds, a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth-most of them
preventable. To address this crisis, Owens is on a mission to train 100 midwives across Africa. Her efforts now focus on offering scholarships to young women in Ghana to attend Wisconsin International University.
Upon graduation, these trained midwives will be deployed to rural communities to deliver urgently needed care to mothers and babies.
"This is my life's work," Owens said. "It's my mission and my purpose."
To support this cause, Owens created Desert Sage Lifestyle Wellness, a luxury wellness brand selling herbal teas, aromatherapy candles, natural body wash, lotion, and non-alcoholic wines. Fifteen percent of every purchase is donated to fund scholarships for midwifery students.
"Every time someone buys from Desert Sage, they're part of something bigger-they're helping save lives," she explained.
Owens now wakes each day fueled by purpose. Whether overseeing scholarship programs, mentoring students, or developing Desert Sage products, she is driven by one unwavering goal: to change the narrative for women and children in Africa.
Her journey-from nurse to attorney to international advocate-proves one thing: when passion meets purpose, change is not only possible-it's unstoppable.
