Hōjicha – The Roasted Soul of Japanese Tea
Hōjicha is a distinctive Japanese green tea that sets itself apart by its warm, roasted aroma and soothing flavor.
Unlike most Japanese green teas—which are steamed—Hōjicha is made from roasted bancha (late-harvest tea leaves), sencha, or even kukicha (twig tea),
giving it its signature reddish-brown hue and nutty, smoky taste.
- Process: Roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal at high temperature
- Flavor profile: Toasty, slightly caramel-like, smooth, and low in bitterness
- Caffeine level: Low – ideal for evening sipping or for children and elders
- Color: Golden to amber-red
- Temperature to brew: 80–90°C (176–194°F)
Hōjicha Latte:
This modern twist blends roasted tea with frothed milk or a dairy alternative (like oat or almond),
often sweetened with honey or vanilla. It's creamy, caffeine-light, and a wellness café favorite.
